The Government decided to introduce distance education programmes through Guru Gedara TV channel for the students during vacation extended due to the spread of COVID-19 in the country, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday.
Addressing a virtual press conference, he said plans were in place to telecast 2,700 lessons to benefit the students. The Education Ministry postponed the reopening of schools by two weeks following the latest outbreak of the pandemic.
The Minister said the lessons would be telecast in a move to minimize the loss of learning time of school children during the lock-down period. he also said that airtime would be secured from Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation to conduct those lessons for the benefit of the students without television sets or on-line facilities at their homes.
“We are mindful of such students,” he said.
The Minister said self- learning tool kits related to the third term syllabi would be provided to school children.
