The government will introduce a new Constitution in another three years’ time and there is ample time until then to submit proposals on the future of the Provincial Council system, Cabinet spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.
Dr. Jayatissa told the weekly Cabinet briefing that the current status quo regarding the Provincial Council system would remain till then, and any future decision on it would depend on proposals to be submitted.
He made these remarks in response to a question whether there would be any attempt to scrap the Provincial Council system in the evolution of a new Constitution.
The National People’s Power (NPP), in its election manifesto, pledged to introduce a new Constitution.
