JVP MP Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday the government was trying to introduce Counter Terrorism Act (CTA) in a haste to suppress anti-government protests while the heads of security forces had claimed that such an act was not needed to resolve extremist terrorism.
He told parliament that the CID and TID directors had pointed out at the Sectoral Oversight Committee that the prevailing laws were sufficient to defeat extremist terrorism and that new laws were not needed.
“The government is trying to introduce the CTA in a haste at this juncture. This is an Act to suppress trade unions and peoples’ struggle against the government,” he said.
MP Jayatissa said this Act should be defeated for the sake of democracy.
