The Government Information Department has warned WhatsApp users not to share any one-time passwords (OTP) with third parties, as this can lead to account hacking.
They highlighted reports of illegal money acquisition using fake websites, social media platforms, SMS, and impersonating banks, government, or business institutions.
Sri Lanka’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) also advised against sharing OTPs, PINs, or passwords. Once an OTP is shared, the WhatsApp account becomes inactive for the original user, allowing hackers to access contacts and request money under false pretenses.
Social media users, including WhatsApp users, are urged to enable two-factor authentication to secure their accounts. If any hacking or illegal activity occurs, users should file a complaint with the police cyber crimes division at [email protected].
