Minister of Agriculture Chamal Rajapaksa said the government’s decision to ban the import of 17 food items would stand.

Addressing a gathering at the National Tree Planning Campaign at the Dharmagiri Giruwasanda Temple in Pallemulana in Medamulana he said the Corona pandemic would be considered an opportunity to annihilate the causes that made Sri Lanka a backward country.

“The government has decided to give a new impetus to agriculture and to make the country self sufficient in food using our plentiful resources. With this in view the government would suspend the import of food that could be grown locally.

Most of the food that we need could be produced here. The people hail this national programme that saves the colossal expenditure incurred on the import of food.
