Grama Niladhari is alleged to have stolen Rs.100,000

An inquiry has been launched against the Grama Niladhari of East Kithalagama, Matara over a fraud of more than Rs.100,000 from the government-launched Rs. 5000 allowance programme.


The Matara District Secretary Pradeep Ratnayake said the female officer had allegedly forged signatures of persons from low-income families in her area and helped herself to funds which were allocated for distribution.  Subsequently, she has been transferred to the Thihagoda Divisional Secretariat’ Office pending an inquiry.  


District Secretary Ratnayake said strict disciplinary action would be taken against her based on the findings.  
The Social Empowerment Ministry launched the relief scheme of Rs. 5000 allowance for those who lost their means of earning due to Covid-19.
