Hundreds of thousands of people belonging to low-income families such as daily wage earners, self-employed persons including trishaw drivers, private bus crew members and transport sector employees are facing a dire situation due to the curfew that is imposed these days in view of coronavirus threat.

Sri Lanka’s three-wheeler population has topped one million from far back as 2015 and it has grown further since. Besides, it has been estimated that more than 50,000 people relied on various jobs related to the transportation sector with around 7,000 containers alone.

With many export and import businesses being hampered by the current situation in the country as well as in the world, many containers are said to be idling, leaving those who relied on container transportation to find other means to make ends meet.
