Parliament yesterday found fault with the police and the Bribery Commission for their failure to take action on recommendations made by various committees.

The matter came up after Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) Chairman Lasantha Alagiyawanna presented a report in the House last morning.

`MP Alagiyawanna said the police have failed to take action on the recommendations made by COPA during the recent past.

“Police are following a lethargic approach on the recommendations made by us,” the MP said.

Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe who responded said the Speaker should summon the heads of the police and other institutions which have failed to implement the recommendations made by parliamentary committees. “Police and the Bribery Commission were asked to take action against 16 large scale frauds uncovered during my tenure as the Chairman of COPE. However, no action has been taken to this date. I request the Speaker to summon the heads of these institutions and advice them on taking action on the recommendations made by various parliamentary committees,” he said.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella who also stressed the need to implement the recommendations made by the committees said the biggest issue is that some recommendations have not been sent to the relevant institutions for action.
