It is essential to go for any kind of election which will reflect the people’s mandate, so that Sri Lanka could get more international support to resolve the crisis situation, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.   Mr. Kiriella told a press conference that a government established with the people’s mandate would get more support.
“It is sad that those who rule the nation today do not want to form an actual multi-party government,” he said.
Also he said all Sri Lankan political parties should voice their views on the latest negotiations that are going on with India. There is a move to establish a high-powered electricity cable between India and Sri Lanka, setting up of an industrial zone in the East at a location close to Trincomalee harbour and allowing Indian investors to start up two power projects. All political parties should voice their opinion on it,” he added.

Further Mr. Kiriella said constitutional reforms which curtail powers of the executive President should be introduced. “The 22nd Amendment to the constitution proposed by the government does not fulfill this need,” he said.
