The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) on Monday passed a resolution to turn the Kollupitiya market into a mixed development project in partnership with a Chinese investor.
Both the UNP and SLPP members voted in favour of the motion while the JVP and SLPP member Sharmila Gonawala voted against it. “ I was not against the project but I voted against as I did not approve the procedure which was followed to get the approval of the council ,” she told the Daily Mirror.

The resolution was passed amidst commotion. JVP member Hemantha Kumara said members of his party angrily protested against two members who cheated during voting. “These two members were responding saying yes when the names of members were called in during the voting,” he said. The CMC usually takes up voting by name.
Meanwhile another resolution was passed in the council to construct a new members hall within the town hall complex which will cost of Rs 260 million.
