The monthly allowance issued for the low-income families within the Colombo Municipality area for the month of March, would be delivered to the homes of the beneficiaries on April 8, 9 and 10, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) sources said.
The CMC said the monthly public allowance which was provided by the Public Charity Department was usually distributed through the 15 post offices in the municipality to a total of 12, 970 families.
However, due to the prevailing situation in the country in relation to COVID-19 pandemic, steps have been taken to deliver the allowance to the doorstep of the beneficiaries within 47 divisions in the Colombo Municipality area.
According to the CMC, during the delivery process, the guidelines provided by the Director-General of Health Services would be followed ensuring the safety of the public and CMC employees with the assistance of the Police.
It was said that about Rs.15-16 million was spent on allowances to the public per month and the proceedings were being carried out by relevant officials under the guidance of Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake and the CMC Commissioner.
In addition, the CMC said that steps were being taken to provide the monthly public allowance from next month onwards via electronic payment methods such as easycash or mobicash.
For this purpose, the CMC is setting up a digital data platform with the details of all beneficiaries.
