An individual who had captured a fishing cat from the Maduru Oya National Park and attempted to sell it for Rs.200,000 was arrested by the Wildlife Conservation Officer of the national park.
The suspect was a 28-year-old young man from Wewatta in Dambana who had captured the fishing cat about two months ago.Investigations revealed that he had planned to sell it to an individual in the Akurana area today (20).
A team of wildlife conservators under Officer In Charge of the Galkada entrance in the Maduru Oya National Park Sanjeewa Ratnayaka carried out the raid and arrested the suspect.
They said the fishing cat would be handed over to the Ampara Wildlife Veterinary Unit.
