Man attempting to bribe police to get NTJ member released, remanded

A man who has attempted to bribe the Horowapothana Police OIC to get a suspected National Thowheed Jama’ath member released from custody, was remanded till June 4 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratna yesterday.   
The Horowapothana Police had taken into custody a suspect by the name of Abdul Majeed Mohamed Niyas for allegedly having connections with the National Thowheed Jama’ath (NTJ).   
The man identified as Abdul Gaffoor Mohamed Sifan had attempted to bribe the OIC of Horowapothana Police to get suspected NTJ member Abdul Majeed Mohamed Niyas released from custody thus preventing him from being charged in the court.   


Sifan had attempted to bribe the OIC with Rs 250,000 and by promising to pay an additional amount of Rs 250,000 to the OIC once the police release the suspect Niyas.   


The bribery sleuths had arrested the suspect while offering the bribe. Sifan was produced before the Chief Magistrate and remanded till June 4.
