Department of Agriculture has taken steps to promote mango cultivation as an export crop.
Addressing a training programme Additional Director of Agriculture, North Central Province Dr. Buddhika Abeysinghe said the cultivation of TJC variety which is a popular variety of mangoes in the province would be expanded for export.
Addressing a training programme at Mahailuppallama Agricultural Training Centre for mango cultivators to educate them on modern technology in mango cultivation through Chinese experts, he said, that although about 18,000 acres of TJC variety had already been cultivated in the North Central province
“ However, the cultivators have not been able to raise a bumper crop to find a remunerative market for want of knowledge in technological methods. Steps have been taken to replace traditional methods with modern technology and to expand mango cultivation as an export crop,” The Director said.
The training programme had been organised by the North Central Province Agricultural Department and Mahailukpallam Training Centre. Several Chinese experts in agriculture were present at the occasion.
