A military official was arrested by the Gampola STF on charges of being in possession of five grams of heroin at Nawalapitiya. He was produced before Nawalapitiya Magistrate Chandani Meegoda and remanded till November 11.
Police said the suspect a a resident of Samagipura in Nawalapitiya.
Investigations revealed that he had dealings with drug traffickers in Colombo and had obtained the heroin to be distributed in the several areas in the upcountry. Police said he had been operating this racket for some time. Police said the suspect had misused his official identity card to avoid suspicion and arrest. The STF had carried out the raid on a tip off that the suspect was transporting a stock of heroin from Colombo.
Gampola STF camp Commander Chief Inspector M.S. Pushpakumara, IP Dhanushka Ratnayaka, SI Amila Jayasinghe, SI Herath were assisted by the STF motor patrol unit made the arrest on the instructions of Kandy Zonal Commander ASP H.G. Piyananda and Commander Senior DIG M.R. Lathiff.
