More security to popular schools; less for others: Principals’ Union

Security given for popular schools was higher compared to other schools, the Principals’ Services Union yesterday said. 

Union’s President Sunil Premathileke said that following the recent recovery of a large number of weapons, swords and knives, the parents and children said they were not confident enough on their safety and the country’s security.  

The schools were scheduled to reopen for the second term on April 22, but following the Easter Sunday bomb attacks, it was postponed to May 6. However, the attendance of students has been very low.  

“The Kadawatha Madhya Maha Vidyalaya had marked 50 students out of 2,000 on the first day. It was 80 on the second day and did not reach 100 on the third day,” he said.  
Fewer than 100 students attended on the third day after the commencement of the second term on Monday (6), he said.  

“However, popular schools have been provided with more security personnel,” he said.  

Parents had given letters to Principals claiming that their children would not be sent to schools until the security was re-established in the country and assurance by the Government Mr. Weerasinghe added.
