Network Against Disinformation calls for expediting process of debunking AI-generated videos

-AI-generated videos featuring the faces of Presidential candidates already circulating on social media, the inability to debunk these videos and remove them quickly could potentially influence the final outcome of the election.

Network Against Disinformation (NAD) called for the relevant authorities to expedite the process of debunking AI-generated videos related to the 2024 Presidential Election in collaboration with institutions that have already offered their services in this regard.   

NAD said this in a statement issued responding to the news article published in the Daily Mirror on September 2, 2024, titled “AI generated election related videos: Election Commission handicapped without tools”.   

“We have taken note of the news article published in the Daily Mirror on September 2, 2024, titled “AI generated election related videos: Election Commission handicapped without tools,” which cites sources from the Election Commission indicating that the Commission currently lacks the necessary technology to debunk AI-generated videos related to the 2024 Presidential Election,   

With various AI-generated videos featuring the faces of Presidential candidates already circulating on social media, the inability to debunk these videos and remove them quickly could potentially influence the final outcome of the election.

Therefore, in order to protect the public’s right to accurate and truthful information, the Network Against Disinformation - Sri Lanka (NAD - Sri Lanka) urgently calls upon the relevant authorities to expedite the process of debunking in collaboration with institutions that have already offered their services in this regard.   

We have also observed a significant amount of disinformation circulating in connection with Presidential candidates, as well as the parties and alliances they represent, and we urge that these be closely monitored,” the statement added.     -AI-generated videos featuring the faces of Presidential candidates already circulating on social media, the inability to debunk these videos and remove them quickly could potentially influence the final outcome of the election.
