No campaigning allowed from midnight today

• Commission warns of tough action against violators

The election campaigning activities for Thursday’s General Election are scheduled to end at midnight today.

During this ‘silent period’ up to the completion of polling on Thursday, any form of election campaign activities are prohibited, and the police are authorized to enforce the law and arrest anybody who violate election rules, according to the Election Commission.  

Apart from the political parties, independent groups and candidates, the media also has to observe this silent period. However, tomorrow’s newspapers would be allowed to carry reports of campaign meetings held today.  

Election monitoring organizations say that serious cases of election law violations and election related violence had decreased drastically this year.
