UNP has decided not to go for a coalition but to form its own government after the general elections.
This decision was made by the UNP working committee which met at party head quarters- Sirikotha yesterday.
Meanwhile UNP former MP Vajira Abeywardene who elaborated the move at a press conference said his party will form the government in August this year even if the party did not obtain a majority of seats in Parliament. “The 19th Amendment to the Constitution enables any party to form a government if it musters a majority. Therefore we will form a government next month,” he said.
“ We will win even if we lose the general election. Also the working committee has decided to suspend four members of Balapitiya and Akmeemana Pradeshiya Sabhas from the party,” he said.
Mr. Abeywardene further revealed that there was a possibility that the party would scrap positions such as Deputy Leader and Assistant Leader after August 5 2020. “These positions were created after certain members of the party launched a battle against the leadership in the year 2000.
