There are no legal provisions for carrying out a lab test on samples of fertilizer that had been imported from China by a third party, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.  Kiriella told a press conference that the Plant Protection Act does not provide provisions for a third party to subject the samples of fertilizer to a test.

" The company which imported the fertilizer could only make an appeal to the Plant Quarantine Service as per the law.

" What is done today is the infliction of undue influence on relevant institutions to get the shipment of Chinese fertilizer unloaded in Sri Lanka. We have found out that officials of a state Bank have been subjected to undue influence asking the heads to release funds to the company which has imported fertilizer " he said.
