Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said there were many instances where illegal goods were being imported to the country and said the Customs should thwart these attempts in order to increase state revenue.

Speaking at the International Customs Day ceremony held at Sri Lanka Customs Headquarters, the Prime Minister said, this income would be utilized in the development of the country.
“The Customs generates 56% of the country’s revenue. That money is being used for the development of the country,” he said.

He said the World Customs Organisation began on January 26, 1952 but the Sri Lanka Customs Service is about 210 years old.

“The Sri Lanka Customs Service started in 1806. Ships have come to Sri Lanka even during the times of ancient kings. In all such cases, taxes have been levied. That is why our Customs Department has a great history,” he said.

“We have great faith in the Customs Department and its officials. It is your duty and responsibility to maintain that trust and serve more effectively,” he said.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa also opened the Customs Inquiry Centre at the event.

Ministers Johnston Fernando, Wimal Weerawansa, Shehan Semasinghe, Finance Ministry Secretary S. R. Attygalle, Acting Director of Customs Wimalendra Raja, Chairman of the Ports Authority, Retired General Daya Ratnayake and many Customs officials were present at the occasion.
