PM’s 40,000 mega housing scheme in Central Colombo takes off

The proposed housing scheme to build 40,000 houses for shanty dwellers in the Colombo City has commenced in the Colombo Central on the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse. The programme will be implemented by the Urban Development Authority.  


The construction works of 1,000 houses near  the Sirimutu Uyana in Stadiumgama in Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Colombo 14, under the programme, commenced at an event with Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development , Water Supply and Housing Dr. Priyath Banduwickreme as the chief guest.  


The  Rs.5950 million project funded by the Asian Infra structure Facilities and Development Bank, would be completed within three years. The UDA has planned to provide houses to the shanty dwellers in several areas including Colombo Central, Colombo North, Borella, and Dematagoda. Addressing the ceremony, the Ministry Secretary said the government that faced the challenge of the Corona virus pandemic would uplift the construction sector that had suffered a setback.   


 Chairman of the UDA Harshana De Silva, Director General Prasad Ranaweera and several senior officials of the ministry and the UDA were present at the occasion.
