Three police officers attached to the Parliament Police Unit have been transferred after they tried to check a parcel being brought in to the parliament premises by a government MP, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara said yesterday.   He told Parliament that it was a bad precedent for MPs to obstruct duties of police personnel saying that this would discourage them to carry out their duties.

“A Government MP has refused to allow the police to check a parcel brought by him in to the Parliament. The three police officers who were involved in the checking have been transferred. This is not a good move. Police officers will be discouraged to conduct their duties, if such things continue to happen,” he said.

He said it was a serious situation if MPs prevent their parcels being checked and that it was a matter of security of the MPs.  Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane said he had not received any complaint on such an incident and assured to look into the matter.
