Train passengers who expressed concern about constant derailments in the upcountry main line said eleven derailments had occurred in the upcountry railway for the last six months of the year, and that four derailments had occurred in June alone.

In the latest incident, the Colombo bound night mail from Badulla had derailed between Galaboda and Inguruoya Railway Stations in the early hours of Monday (30).

Passengers pointed out that they faced immense hardship in case of a derailment for want of transport to the road to continue their journey by buses. They said they would have to make a long trek through hard terrain carrying their bags and baggage and their infant children.

They pointed out that foreign tourists were among those who faced the ordeal in case of a derailment.
