A stock of 150,000 kg of vegetables was handed over to the army by a trader in Dambulla Economic Centre to be distributed among the people in Colombo facing hardship due to the curfew. The Good Samaritan P.G.S.Piyasena Gamage made the donation at the request of Minister Janaka Bandara Thennakoon.
Addressing a gathering the Minister said the business activities in the Economic Centre commenced on April 19 after talks with Army Commander Mjr. Gen. Shavendra Silva and that it largely benefited the farmers who had been facing hardship for want of a market for their produce.
Members of the Traders Association loaded the stock of vegetables into the military vehicles under the supervision of Lt. Col. Kapila Nolton. Army spokesperson said the stock of vegetables would be transported to Army Headquarters and distributed free among the people.
