Claiming that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders in the system to ensure road safety, the police said they are conducting special operations during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year festive season.
Peak in road accidents were reported during the month of April each year.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said according to the statistics compared with other months, the highest number of road accidents were reported each year during the period between April 10 and 20.
“There is an issue related to the road safety in the country. The drivers, passengers and pedestrians have responsibility to prevent road accidents,” he said. The spokesman said that the stakeholders in the system, such the Road Development Authority (RDA) , Transport Ministry, Provincial Transport Authorities and Local Government authorities had equal responsibilities to ensure road safety.
DIG Rohana said the police were conducting special operations to minimize the road accidents.
He urged the public and stakeholders’ assistance to prevent road accidents to safeguard the lives of the public.
According to the statistics an average of 10 deaths were being lost daily in road accidents.
