A sergeant attached to the Pelmadulla Police was arrested by Bribery Commission officials yesterday for accepting Rs.50,000 as a bribe.
The Bribery Commission said the sergeant of the Pelmadulla Police Crimes Unit was arrested outside the Pelmadulla Magistrate’s Court premises.
The suspect had sought Rs.50,000 as a bribe from the complainant, who was also a suspect in a jewellery shop robbery in Pelmadulla last year, promising to give a copy of the complaint and a summary of evidence relating to the case at the Pelmadulla Courts.

Five suspects including the complainant were arrested over the robbery where jewellery valued at over Rs. 30 million were robbed. They were released on bail on August 6, last year.
The arrested sergeant, a resident of Opanayake, is to be produced in the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court.
