Former Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday that the government should pay attention to predictions by international bodies about the possible resurgence of COVID-19 for the second time when restrictions are eased.
The former Minister told a press conference that a deadly resurgence of the disease could occur once again if the current restrictions were removed. “What these international bodies have said is that many would die from the disease if the shutdown and the curfew are removed,” he said.
He said WHO had predicted that 2.2 million people will die from the disease in USA while more than half a million people will die in UK.
Dr. Senaratne said the Cambridge Analysis should also be taken into consideration. He said this by highlighting the recommendation made by this analysis of a 49-day lockout.
“The proposal made by this analysis that schools and universities should not be opened even after the lockdown, should also be focused,” he said.
He said the latest findings by Japan that COVID-19 virus is airborne should also be taken seriously. “Research camera which has been used by Japan and had found that the COVID-19 virus is in the air, is an important finding,” the former Minister said.
