Poultry Farmer Association complains Broiler chicks imported without proper management

The Small and Medium Scale Breeder and Broiler Manufacturers Association levelled allegations against the government that the poultry farmers in the island have been greatly inconvenienced and a large sum of money is being wasted as a result of government’s inability to pay due attention to them.   

This was mentioned by the National Organiser of All Ceylon Farmers Federation, Namal Karunarathna with 17 representatives of these associations at a news briefing held at Dambulla recently.   The Secretary of the Federation, 

H. M Alahakone said that a sum of Rs. 13.86 billion is being spent annually for the import of hens (layers) and broiler chicks to the country without proper management. He revealed that the poultry farmers have faced a crisis due to the fact that the prices of poultry medicines have gone up and that they were compelled to maintain a large number of birds.   

According to him, multi-national companies and local companies are engaged in destroying poultry farmers business instead of maintaining the small and medium poultry farmers. He also said that the per capita chicken consumption is nine kilos and it is a great loss when a larger quantity than that is being produced is wasted annually.   

The convener of the federation Sanjeewa Karuna Sagara said that small and medium scale poultry farmers were facing a severe crisis due to this reason.
