The name board of Gurukanda Ancient Rajamaha Vihara in Mullaitivu has been removed by the officers of Road Development Authority on Friday,
it is learnt.
The officers of the Road Development Authority (RDA) informed the Chief Incumbent of Gurukanda Rajamaha Vihara, Ven. Colombo Medhalankarakiththi Thera that it was removed according to a complaint lodged by the people. This board had been put up about ten years ago without obtaining permission within the RDA premises.
The Chief Incumbent said that a group of people who came to this place have removed the name board of Gurukanda Vihara without removing the name board in Tamil as the Mullaithivu Magistrate had given judgement recently to name the devale of the vihara as Neeravi Pillair Kovil.
The Chief Incumbent elaborating his views said “The officers of RDA informed me that they are going to remove the name board of the temple and accordingly they came and removed it. But they did not remove the name board of Neeravi Pillari Kovil which was displayed in Tamil. They removed our name board and they went away after handing over it to us. “
He said further that the vihara concerned was registered at the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and hence its name board can be displayed. This board had been there for the last ten years. However, he said that he was sad because the RDA officers have not taken any step to remove the name board of Neeravi Pillair Kovil although they removed the name board of the vihara.
