Rainy conditions that is experienced currently is to prevail but likely to subside by June 27, as the Southwest Monsoon conditions will become less active, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday. Department of Meteorology Director General Athuka Karunanayake told media that the rains particularly in the Southwest part of the country is expected to reduce by June 27.
He said strong winds and rough seas will prevail with wind speed expected to be at 70 kmph. Meanwhile, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai via Allaitivu and Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will be rough with strong winds up to 55 kmph.
Wave heights may increase to 2.5m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
The naval and fishing communities were requested to be attentive as the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankesanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be very rough, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre said.
A two storied house was damaged in Bandaragama due to heavy winds while several houses were damaged in Maspotha Kurunegala due to heavy winds. Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the central hills, the Wimalasurendra reservoir has started spilling since according to the Department of Irrigation.
Heavy rainfall has been received on the western slopes of the central hills since Monday (24). Kegalle received the highest rainfall of 95mm as of yesterday while Ratnapura and the Central Province also received similar rainfall.
Meanwhile, the water level in Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs is approaching spill level.
