Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauff Hakeem who condemned the assassination of Hamas Leader, Ismail Haniyeh warned that it will increase potential for a regional war.
“It is even more deplorable that the Israeli Zionist regime has unleashed a terror strike, killing a leader in the midst of ceasefire negotiations. It is a shame that they have assassinated a leader who was the head of a peace negotiation team. This dastardly act is increasing the potential for a regional war as it is already evident in Beirut and Tehran,” Mr. Hakeem said in a statement. We, in Sri Lanka, while sending our deepest condolences to the Hamas and the Palestinian people in their bereavement, also fervently hope that the present conflict will not deter the parties from deviating from a ceasefire negotiation and that all attempts will be made to prevent the spreading of violence in the region. Haniyeh, who campaigned an unarmed resistance against Israeli occupation was elected Prime Minister of the State of Palestine when he led Hamas to election victory in Gaza winning the legislative election in 2006. In 2019, he was elected the Political Leader of Hamas and went into exile and continued to remain active.
