Reckless lorry driver causes accident leaving one dead, two injured

• The driver had fled from the scene leaving the lorry by the roadside

One died and two others were seriously injured when a tipper lorry hit two motorcycles at Viharagala in Sooriyawewa.  

A motorcyclist who had halted by the roadside and another running in the direction towards Padalangala were knocked down by the lorry. One of the motorcyclists, who was waiting for his child attending a nearby school, died on the spot.  

The deceased, identified as Liyanage Authur (78), was a resident of Alioluara in Sooriyawewa.  

The other rider who received serious injuries was admitted to Hambantota general hospital.  

Investigations revealed that the reckless driving of the lorry driver resulted in the accident. He had fled from the scene leaving the lorry by the roadside.  

Sooriyawewa police are conducting investigations to arrest the absconding driver.
