Five people including the driver who were arrested for driving a car in a reckless manner on the Southern Express-way (E-01) on April 10, were granted bail by the Panadura Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the suspects were granted personal bail of Rs. 500,000 each.

Police launched an investigation after a video that went viral on social media showing a group of men commuting in a car in a highly reckless manner on the Express-way.
The video clearly showd that four people on board a sedan, had lowered the shutters and seated on the doors facing each other from both sides of the vehicle. Their unruly behaviour was causing disturbance and distraction to the fellow motorists who were driving along on the Express-way.

The passengers and the driver were arrested following the investigations conducted on April 13 and were remanded till yesterday (22).
DIG Rohana said that charges were also framed against the original owner of the car who was a resident of Kandy for not following proper procedure when registering the vehicle.
The Court imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the original owner of the vehicle.

The case was postponed to November 5, 2021.
