A stretch of the Nuwara Eliya - Thalawakele road through Desford has caved in indicating an imminent danger of an earth slip. Asst. Director of the Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit Ranjith Alahakoon said.
He said that work on the laying of bitumen carpet was going on when the road caved in and that cracks appearing in the location were a sign of a possible earth-slip.
Residents of the area pointed out that the side wall of a culvert was in danger of collapse. They were of the opinion that haphazard road development works had led to the present condition. They said a torrent of water flowed into the KotmaleOya River through the endangered culvert during heavy rains.
Meanwhile, the NanuOya Police had taken steps to operate traffic only on one lane.
