A large stock of iron plates, suspected to be stolen from Ganegoda Worksite of the Central Express Way Project was seized in transit and seven suspects, including three employees of the project, were arrested on Sunday evening (25) by Pallewela Police.

The Police said the two trucks transporting the iron plates were seized during the raid.

A senior police officer said the stock of stolen goods were seized and the suspects arrested during investigations of a complaint received from the project office regarding the alleged theft. The stock of iron had been valued at Rs.7 million.

He said the security guard, a backhoe operator, and an employee of the project were among the suspects arrested. “Investigations revealed that an individual from the Bemmulla area had made arrangements to sell the stock of iron to a scrap iron trader in the Sapugaskanda area,” the officer said.

The suspects and the two loads of iron plates were produced before Attanagalle Magistrate last morning.
