Some political leaders have got disturbed and are asking for the premiership and the government as negotiations with donor agencies and countries are on the path to success, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

Mr. Wijewardene who met some professionals said the negotiations with India, China and USA and also with IMF representatives are heading towards success.

“Talks have begun with other countries such as Russia to resolve the fuel crisis. Some political parties have got disturbed about the negotiations and that is why they are asking for power. One political leader is asking for the reins for six months, while another is asking for five years. One political leader who is asking for six months is one who ran away when the premiership was offered to him. These persons who want power for six months do not want to give a space of time for the incumbent Prime Minister to resolve the issues,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
“The issue with regard to fuel arose as the suppliers from which Sri Lanka purchased fuel refused to supply any more as a total amount of $ 738 million which was due to them was not paid. In addition, no one accepts letters of credit issued by the banks in Sri Lanka. This is why Sri Lanka had to look for new suppliers. Talks are on with Russia and other nations to purchase fuel,” he added.

“A number of other countries have also faced similar crisis situations with regard to fuel in the past. The UK also faced such a crisis in the recent years. However, all political parties in that country managed to get together and established a national consensus. Sri Lanka also must do the same,” he also said.
