The Sri Lanka Navy has seized over 600 kg of narcotics valued at over Rs. 13 billion during naval operations conducted so far in 2024.  According to the Navy, they have confiscated narcotics with a street value exceeding Rs. 13,210 million and have handed over these substances to authorities for legal proceedings.  In a recent naval operation conducted approximately 356 nautical miles (700 km) off Dondra Head in the southern waters, the Navy seized about 131 kg of heroin valued at over Rs. 3,250 million.

The operation, executed with SLNS Parakramabahu, resulted in the arrest of six suspects involved in the illegal act.  The fishing trawler was escorted to Galle Harbour, where a thorough inspection uncovered 131.754 kg of heroin concealed in secret compartments within its hull. This special operation was based on intelligence provided by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard. The Navy said they closely collaborated with law enforcement agencies to conduct regular operations in pursuit of this objective.

Meanwhile, the Navy urged the public to share information regarding individuals involved in drug smuggling, posing as fishermen.
