State funeral for Sampanthan next Sunday in Trincomalee

The funeral of former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan will be conducted in Trincomalee next Sunday under state patronage. He, 91, passed away on Sunday.  

The remains of the late Tamil leader is to be brought to Parliament on Wednesday for the MPs to pay their last respects.   

The remains will lie at Parliamentary premises from 2pm to 4pm.   

Late R. Sampanthan was the oldest sitting MP in Sri Lankan Parliament and was the Leader of Opposition from 2015 to 2018.   

Parliament session on Wednesday has been postponed as a mark of respect to the late MP.   

Funeral of the late leader is to be held in Trincomalee on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
