“The Law for the Conservation of Forests and Wildlife in Sri Lanka”

“The Law for the Conservation of Forests and Wildlife in Sri Lanka” a book written in Sinhala by Assistant Conservator of Forests Lalith Gamage has been translated into English by Retired Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Defence,S.Medawewa.The book authored by Mr. Lalitha Gamage, an officer with a long stint in the field, is considered the first ever introduction to the laws pertaining to the protection, management and development of forests and wildlife resources. The writer, as a law enforcement official in the Department of Forest Conservation and Secretary of the Forests Conservationist’s Organisation possesses a wide knowledge of forest, wildlife and environmental conservation.

The book “Law for the Conservation of Forests and Wildlife in Sri Lanka” would therefore fill a long felt need of an illustration on laws applicable to the field and be of immense benefit to the legal fraternity and the lay reader as well.   
Conservator General of Forests W.A.C.Weragoda in his message has said the book authored by Asst. Conservator of Forests Lalith Gamage is evidence of his resolve to preserve the environment and the country beyond the horizons of official duties.   

Translator of the book, Retired Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Defence S. Medawewa was a Sri Lanka Administrative Service officer who had handled the subject of forestry and environment for more than a decade as a senior official in the Ministry of Land, Irrigation and Mahaweli Development , Ministry of Forestry, Irrigation and Mahaweli Development and the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Forestry.   
The Tamil translation of the book is slated to be launched next week.
