Two new varieties of rice with high yield had been experimented by the Bombuwala Rice Research Centre, Deputy Director Mrs Deepika Weeerasinghe said. She said excessive iron found in the low-country paddy had been removed in the new varieties. She said the yield during experiments in case of the two varieties was 180 bushels per hectare. The Deputy Director said the two new varieties would be presented to the Viral Committee, before being released to the farmers. “The two vanities BW 11-3402 and BW-12/574 have been successfully grown in the paddy lands of Murunkan and Kalutara areas. “They are more suitable for low-country wetlands and the yield from the Kalutara area and that of Murunkan were equally 180 bushels per hectare,” she said.
