UNP backbenchers have told Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that it would have been possible to convince people on the security situation of the country if the government had taken effective measures such as creating a full-time law and order ministry and appointing Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as its head.
The backbenchers have expressed these sentiments to the Prime Minister when they met him last morning at Temple Trees.
According to informed sources, these MPs have told the premier that the government was unable to convince parents to send their children to schools despite assurance given by defence authorities and intelligence services, as it failed to take necessary action that would have won the confidence of the people. Sources said the Prime Minister had discussed the intelligence reports on the recent violence in the Northwestern Province and in Minuwangoda and that the reports have revealed prominent officials attached to several political parties were behind the barbarity. These reports have also revealed that violence was best organised in Hettipola, the hometown of NTJ leader Zahran’s wife.
It was further revealed that the Prime Minister had told the MPs that the government did not intend to ban social media permanently but would only block in areas where problems flared up. Also he said those who use social media via alternative gateways.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister who met with UNP’s communication force led by MP Hesha Withanage said investigations into the Easter Sunday carnage had been successful.
“The government is focusing on concluding the investigations soon and to bring those who are responsible to book rather than divulging information to get political mileage. There are very few instances where progress has been made when it comes to investigations done just days after a terrorist attack. The investigations into the killing of Jaffna Mayor Alfred Duraiappah took ten years to complete,” he said.
