Leo Club of University of Colombo District 306 C1 conducted a series of programmes recently to raise awareness on natural disaster management.
The project “Survival 3.0” was conducted under three phases by Leo Club of University of Colombo District 306 C1 with the intention of encouraging awareness and preparedness on natural disaster management and prevention among people.
A webinar was conducted as the first phase of the project on the theme of “How to Prevent Natural Disasters?” through the Zoom Application on January 24th at 6.00pm with the contribution of Mrs. Anoja Seneviratne, Director of Mitigation Research and Development, Disaster Management Centre. The online webinar was successfully conducted with 73 participants while attaining the intention of raising the awareness of people on various types of natural hazards, sources of natural disasters, disaster risk management and disaster risk prevention treatments.’
As the second phase, a drowning management and prevention session; “Hit the Surf!” was conducted along with the aid of Mr. M. W. D. Wickramaratne, the Instructor, Life Saving Association, Sri Lanka on February 6th at 8.00am at the Mount Lavinia Beach. The attendees were instructed on the preliminary steps to escape a drowning victim, the way a drowning victim asks for support, the response that should be given by a self-rescuer, the way of using the rescuer board etc. Additionally, the attendees were practically trained in the sea to provide better training.
A fire safety programme was also conducted as the third phase of the project in order to enhance the knowledge on fire safety measurements at the workplace. This session was conducted at the Shukthi Industriees, Homagama on February 12th at 3.30pm onwards. The team Survival was able to donate fire extinguishers to the particular company while training the staff in relation to the fire safety.
Ultimately, the project “Survival 3.0” was able to attain the objective of encourage the preparedness and the knowledge on disaster management and prevention.
