Underworld’s underground bunker in Bondupitiya

An underground bunker in a house in Bondupitiya in the Welipenna area was detected during a search operation carried out by the Police and the Security forces. 
The Welipenna Police and the security forces held a search operation in the Welipenna town and its environs to provide protection to the Sinhala and Muslim community and to prevent underworld activities. 

A Senior Police Officer said several underworld activities and other illegal activities had been reported from the Bondupitiya area. 

He said the owner of the house was an individual who had been punished by the court for his involvement in underworld activities including clashes with rival underworld gangs and shooting. 

The Police said that they believed the bunker, complete with all facilities and provided with oxygen, had been built to provide protection to the family in case of an underworld attack. 
A Police team under OIC Welipenna Police IP W.K. Gamage and OIC Crimes Investigations IP Damith Jayatilleka and more than 400 security forces personnel carried out the search operation on the instructions of ASP Sanjaya Irasinghe and SP Upul Nilmini Ariyaratne.
