Masks, gloves and other items used by people including those who have been quarantined should not be sent to garbage dumping sites, Western Province Solid Waste Management Authority Director Nalin Manapperuma said yesterday.

He said items such as masks and gloves, particularly those used by people who have been quarantined, should not be mixed with household garbage because of the possibility of such items being a source of COVID-19 infection for garbage disposal workers.

Mr. Manapperuma said these items should be burnt without mixing them with household garbage and added that the local authorities had been advised to be cautious when
collecting garbage.

Meanwhile, the Western Province Solid Waste Management Authority had asked the local authorities not to send items such as masks and gloves to dumping sites.
There are 25 garbage dumping sites in the Western Province used by 49 local authorities to dump garbage.
