Villagers from Habarana have been trying to save a sickly baby elephant lying on the Namalpura tank bed in Palugaswewa.

They said that as the baby elephant had been in bad health for six days, after informing the Wildlife Conservation Officers, veterinary physicians had treated the baby elephant. Since the treatment given showed no result, villagers have given indigenous medicine to the baby elephant and it has recovered to a certain extent.

Although the baby elephant is several kilometres away from the village, the villagers take a 24 hour job caring of the baby elephant by feeding and cleaning it.
