 A police sergeant of Naula police who was knocked down by a lorry at Hunganwela junction on the Kandy-Jaffna highway on Monday evening (20) died on admission to Nalanda Regional Hospital. He was off duty and on his way home when he met with the accident.   


The victim Jaliya Bandara Kohona (45) was a resident of Moragaspitiya in Pallepola and father of two children.   
The lorry had sped away after the accident, but two police officers on traffic duty gave chase, seized the lorry and arrested the hit and run driver.   


 Investigations revealed that the driver and two others in the truck were drunk.   


A senior police official said Sergeant Jaliya Bandara who counted a service of 25 years had served in the operational areas during the North-East war.   


A police team under OIC Naula Police CI U.G.P.K.Ratnayake are conducting investigations on instructions of 
SP Ajith Wansanatha.
