A ruling party member of the Imbulpe Pradeshiya Sabha was behind the recent attack on the students of the Sabaragamuwa University, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led Socialist Youth Union (SYU) charged yesterday.  SYU National Organiser Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told a news briefing that this Pradeshiya Sabha member had given liquor to those who attacked the students before arming them. “This group of thugs had then gone and attacked the students,” Dr. Jayatissa charged.
Dr. Jayatissa said that the claim made by police spokesman Ajith Rohana that the attackers have not been under the influence of liquor at the time of the attack was a joke. He also blamed the police for their apathy and said that an inquiry should be conducted on why the police had reached the area 40 minutes after they were informed of the attack.
He said that the month of October was a special month as far as education was concerned as the system of free education had been established in this month by the late Minister of Education C. W. W. Kannangara on October 1, 1954.
