Kelani Right Bank Water Supply Project (Stage Two)
Maga Engineering, Sri Lanka’s leading construction company, completed Rs. 6 billion worth of work in the water sector in the year 2018, delivering few projects of national importance in the process.
Underscoring the significance on achieving United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal to access affordable drinking water for all citizens, Government of Sri Lanka has given top priority to developing the country’s water infrastructure. Accordingly, these projects aim to build and modernise the municipal and rural water infrastructure in the country. At the same time, they are an intermediary step towards the eventual goal of providing a safe drinking water to 100 percent of the urban and rural population, whilst creating the industrial infrastructure requiredfor further economic development.
The first of these projects is the Galagedera-Mawathagama Water Supply Project, implemented by the National Water Supply & Drainage Board of Sri Lanka (NWSDB),at a value of Rs. 3.2 billion with the support of DFCC bank. The project involved the construction of a 1000m³ capacity elevated tower, a 450m³ capacity ground reservoir and supply and laying of 250mm diameter DI & HDPE transmission line of 27km, along with 131 km long distribution system.Now substantially completed, the projectwill provide pipe borne water supply to an estimated population of 20,000 in the eastern part of the Kurunegala District including Galagedara and Paragahadeniya and Mawathagama area of Kandy District.
During the year, Maga also completed the supply and laying of a purific water pipeline along the Extension of Southern Expressway Section 4 From Mattala to Hambantota under the Road Development Authority and China Habour Engineering Company.
The company is presently completing the Towns East of Colombo Water Supply Project (Package 2), implemented by the NWSDB at a value of 4.8 billion rupees with the assistance of the Bank of Ceylon.The project comprises the construction of a ground reservoir of capacity 18,000m³ and the supply and laying of 1,000 mm diameter DI transmission line of 8km and HDPE line of 7km from Iridapola Junction to Meepe. In whole, the Towns East of Colombo Water Supply Project aims to serve a population of 375,00 in the eastern parts of Colombo District including Padukka and Horana.
In addition to the above, Maga is presently executing thecivil works of the Kelani Right Bank Water Supply Project (Stage Two) under the Main Contractor of the project Suez International of France.The project’smain civil works is valued at LKR 8.5 billionand it includes a 180,000m³ water treatment plantof latest technology, a treated water pumping main and a 35km long transmission line.Critical to maintaining and expanding the water supply of the western province, namely north eastern regions of Colombo and Gampaha, the project will benefit 1 million residents in Biyagama, Kelaniya, Kiribathgoda, Kadawatha, Ragama, Wattala, Kandana, Ja-Ela, Seeduwa and Ganemulla areas.
