Fashion Bug discusses Impact of Social Media on Education through Sisu Dirimaga

Sisu Dirimaga, the sustainability arm of Sri Lanka’s leading fashion retail chain, Fashion Bug has continued to uplift the educational aspects of local students since its inception in 2013.  Persisting with its invaluable contribution to the future generation of Sri Lanka, the latest programme under Sisu Dirimaga was conducted recently for O/L and A/L students to discuss the impact of social media on education. 

With the increasing use of mobile and computer devices for educational purposes, students are exposed to the digital world more than before. Identifying a timely topic, the programme not only discussed the safe use of mobile phones, but also the importance of responsible usage of various social media platforms, the advantages and disadvantages of social media and the productive use of education apps. Mrs. Menaka Pathirana – Deputy Director of the Telecom Regulatory Commission conducted the session in Sinhala, for the students of Kotahena Central College, while Mr. Ismail Azeez, reputed Corporate Trainer, administered the programme in Tamil at Kotahena Central Hindu Maha Vidyalaya.

Under Sisu Dirimaga, Fashion Bug has reached towards around 20,000 students in the past years, through a variety of projects such as career guidance and teacher training programmes, resource donations and sponsoring school events. The annual schools arts competition Roo Siththam is one of the key events hosted under Sisu Dirimaga. Several schools from different districts, including Hambanthota, Matara, Negombo, Colombo and Kandy have benefitted through the many initiatives by Fashion Bug.

Speaking about the event, Shabier Subian – CEO of Fashion Bug stated, “At the moment, most of the learning takes place on the digital platforms, and children are online more than they used to. In such a situation, we cannot prohibit the use of mobile phones. Our duty is to educate them on the right and wrong so that they can make informed decisions when using social media. Our Sisu Dirimaga programme has continued to support the well-being of students in Sri Lanka, and we felt that this is one of the key issues that needs to be addressed”.
Focusing on the development of knowledge, attitude and skills of students in the country Sisu Dirimaga plays a vital role in enhancing the minds of the young generation.
